Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Elbit Systems’ subsidiaries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further modernise the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).

The MoU seeks to expand the strategic cooperation between KMW, Elbit Systems Deutschland, and Elbit Systems Land to meet the requirements of rocket artillery users across Europe.

While Elbit Systems Land features a portfolio of land-based platforms and ammunition solutions, Elbit Systems Deutschland has expertise in sensor technology, radio communication, uncrewed systems, and cyber security.

Elbit System Land general manager Yehuda “Udi” Vered said: “We’re pleased to be working with KMW in the area of rocket artillery.

“I believe that this venture creates synergies and is timely given the leading expertise of the companies involved and the growing demand for long-range precision firearms.”

As part of the cooperation, Elbit Systems will provide an advanced active agent portfolio, including rockets with enhanced range.

Practice ammunition will also be made available to help MLRS users train combined arms operations.

KMW Management board chairman Ralf Ketzel said: “With this partnership, we underline the potential of our MLRS.

“The associated capability enhancements make this artillery rocket system one of the most modern worldwide.”

Last month, Elbit Systems won a $548m contract to provide the armed forces of an Asia-Pacific nation with multi-domain, combat networked, warfare capabilities.

As part of the four-year contract, Elbit will deliver an integrated solution comprising ELBIT TIGER-X networking middleware, and a TORCH-X based suite of airborne, land, and ship-borne command and control applications.
