RIA Garrison

Honeywell has received a contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers to augment energy efficiency and sustainability at the Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) Garrison in Rock Island, Illinois, US.

Under the $22.4m contract, the company will install high-efficiency boilers at the garrison to help eliminate its reliance on coal-fired heating, eventually lowering emissions and help the site comply with new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

The 15-year energy savings performance contract covers replacement of the existing coal-fired central steam plant with high-efficiency natural gas boilers at nearly 30 buildings at the garrison.

Honeywell Building Solutions president John Rajchert said: "Our work with the Rock Island Arsenal Garrison is a prime example of how organisations can make important infrastructure upgrades, leveraging guaranteed energy and operational savings to help fund projects."

Rock Island Arsenal Garrison commander colonel Elmer Speights said: "Evolving our operation to be more efficient and sustainable not only helps protect the environment, but also the well-being of the community, which we’ve been a part of for more than 150 years.

"With this project, we’ll reduce our operating costs significantly while also lowering our environmental impact."

"With this project, we’ll reduce our operating costs significantly while also lowering our environmental impact by eliminating our reliance on coal as a heating source."

The heating system upgrade is expected to reduce energy and water consumption by approximately 11% and 12% respectively, while lowering annual greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 20,800t, which is equivalent to removing 4,500 cars from the road.

Expected to complete by 2016, the enhancements would also help the garrison address recent changes to the EPA Clean Air Act, which calls for a reduction of coal use or the installation of costly pollution control equipment in plants that burn fossil fuels.

Honeywell has also performed upgrades at an army manufacturing facility that operates on the arsenal, which combined with the latest project, are expected to cut Arsenal-wide energy use by more than 35% and water consumption by 30%.
