M997A3 HMMWV Ambulance

AM General has received a contract to supply new M997A3 high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) ambulance chassis vehicles to the US military.

The $428.2m firm-fixed-price, multi-year, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract supports domestic disaster relief efforts by the US Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

Under the initial $89.5m contract award, the company will provide 654 M997A3 HMMWV ambulance chassis vehicles to the National Guard.

AM General Programmes and Business Development vice-president Chris Vanslager said: "We are pleased to continue to support the active and future use of the more than 160,000 HMMWV’s currently in service as part of US Army, Marine Corps, Reserves and National Guard fleets.

"This contract is yet another example of the ongoing critical operational need for the HMMWV and how AM General remains the unmatched leader in modernising and maintaining the HMMWV fleet in the United States and around the world."

The M997A3 platform feature an array of upgrades from the previously used ambulances it replaces, including an improved drive train and electrical components, interior improvements inside the ambulance cabin and elements that allow for greater storage of medical equipment.

"We are pleased to continue to support the active and future use of the more than 160,000 HMMWV’s currently in service."

Funding and work location are scheduled to be determined, with an estimated completion date of September 2021.

The company has already received several substantial foreign military orders this year for the delivery of thousands of HMMWVs that have added to its backlog.

In July, AM General was awarded a $373m firm-fixed-price multi-year foreign military sales in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kenya, Lebanon, Ukraine, Tunisia, with options for nearly 2,100 HMMWVs and contractor unique spare parts.

In addition, the company continues to perform work under a private public partnership with the National Guard and Red River Army Depot for the refurbishment and upgrade of ageing HMMWV models that will remain in the military fleet for more than 20 years.
