Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin N. Lorenza has formally received urgent gratis military assistance from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Led by Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua, the military assistance handover ceremony was attended by Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Valued at RMB50m ($6.47m), the package received from China comprises 90 sniper rifles, 3,000 M4 rifles, and six million rounds of assorted ammunitions.

The weapons and ammunition were transported from China to the Philippines using four People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force flights.

During the handover ceremony, Lorenzana conveyed gratitude to the PRC for the donation of firearms and ammunitions.

"We assure you that these donations will be put to productive utilisation by our armed forces."

Lorenzana said: “On behalf of the Filipino people who are indeed the ultimate beneficiaries of Chinese’ magnanimity, I accept this donation from the people of China with a deep sense of gratitude as well as renewed sense of hope for our nation’s safety and security.

The arms and ammunitions received from China add to the existing collection in the Government Arsenal of the Philippines DND for the country’s armed forces.

Lorenzana added that the weapons will help the Philippines’ armed forces to carry out internal security operations, particularly in the southern part of the country.
