Telespazio VEGA Deutschland has secured a contract to develop the aircraft systems trainer (AST) for the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) MRH90 transport helicopters.

Awarded by Airbus Group Australia Pacific, the contract requires the company to develop and deliver AST hardware and software solutions for the purpose of maintenance technician training by the Australian Army's Rotary Wing Aircraft Maintenance School in Oakey, Queensland.

Designed to provide a virtual training environment that is ready for use on PCs, the software solution includes a realistic 3D model of the helicopter that enables navigation both outside the helicopter and within the cockpit, the cabin, the engine deck and other equipment bays to perform maintenance tasks.

Along with a comprehensive training plan, the solution will train technicians to perform various maintenance and inspection procedures, including disassembly and re-assembly, learn the diagnosis equipment to use and how to identify and correct malfunctions properly.

The hardware solution is expected to include two classrooms, with one including an instructor station and two student PCs, as well as a replicated cockpit that is directly linked to the AST simulation software.

"The solution will train technicians to perform various maintenance and inspection procedures including disassembly and re-assembly."

Meanwhile, the second classroom will facilitate training of up to eight students on multi-monitor workstations, guided by an instructor through an instructor workstation.

Working in collaboration with Airbus, the company started AST development in January and will continue the development over the next 20 months.

Telespazio has already developed a virtual maintenance trainer (VMT) for the NH90 tactical transport helicopter, which is the European version of the Australian MRH90 helicopter.

The VMT is being used by the Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and French Armed Forces.

Powered by two Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322-01/9 turboshaft engines, the MRH90 is a multi-role helicopter, and can undertake troop transport, search and rescue, special operations and counter-terrorism missions.
