Rheinmetall Defence has been awarded a contract to upgrade the NH90 cockpit trainers of the German Army (Bundeswehr) with its simulation technology.

Awarded by the Federal Office of Bundeswehr equipment, information technology and in-service support (BAAINBw), the contract requires the company's simulation and training business unit to upgrade all NH90 cockpit trainers to IOC+ configuration.

The contract also calls for the simulators to be programmed with additional software modules from Rheinmetall's Asterion product line.

The NH90 cockpit trainer is currently used for initial and advanced training of Bundeswehr aviation technical personnel in the NH90 helicopter operations at the German Air Force technical training Centre (TAusbZLw) in Fassberg.

Asterion training software modules are claimed to enable Bundeswehr to train aspiring aircraft technicians in all systems of the helicopter without having to use the expensive original weapons system.

"Asterion training software modules are claimed to enable Bundeswehr to train aspiring aircraft technicians in all systems of the helicopter."

Designed for use on varied training devices, from a full replica cockpit to a tablet PC, the Asterion modular simulation realistically reproduces the behaviour and functionality of air, land and sea weapon systems.

The modularly designed training system can be customised to meet client training requirements, and can also be combined with a computer based training solution to maximise the training effort.

Working in collaboration with its subsidiary benntec Systemtechnik, Rheinmetall has also developed a new system for recording and collecting original data of the weapons system for Asterion, which is more cost-effective than earlier methods, and also leads to faster development of individual components and subcomponents of the desired weapons system.

Additional contract details including its value and duration remain undisclosed.

The German Army uses NH90 tactical transport helicopter variant, which is designed to perform evacuation missions over any terrain, day or night and in all weather and visual flight conditions irrespective of the threat scenario.
