Chemring Technology Solutions has received a contract to supply its Breach MC radio frequency initiator to the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).

Under the terms of C$996,000 contract, the company will deliver an undisclosed number of Breach MC radio frequency initiators for use by the Canadian Armed Forces.

The initiators are expected to enable specialised groups, such as explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams, to remotely initiate explosive charges at close range for dismounted operations.

Chemring Technology Solutions managing director Mike Luedicke said: "On operations there is usually little time available for EOD operators to dispose of IEDs.

"Breach MC gives them flexible options and will deliver to the Canadian Armed Forces a new system that is quick, convenient and safe, supporting them to achieve their mission more effectively."

With a range of nearly 1km, Breach MC is suitable for use in operations needing initiation of electro-explosive devices including explosive method of entry (EMOE) and remote disruptor activation for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) tasks.

Claimed to be the only short range selectable firing system available in the market, the securely coded radio frequency (RF) initiator enables a single operator to coordinate multiple initiations, eliminating the requirement for several operators and reducing the risk of human error.

The operators can create up to ten firing groups, each containing any number of receivers to stagger explosions, or simultaneously initiate all receivers by selecting the 'fire-all' mode.

Breach MC uses the same transmitter for both electronic and shock tube receivers in order to deliver flexibility in the field, while the commercial off the shelf batteries maximise its operational availability.

In addition, secure coding and data validation checks are being performed to prevent inadvertent initiation of the receiver, ensuring operator safety.

Canada-based distributor Deltic Group will supply the initiators, but the delivery schedule remains undisclosed.
