The US State Department has approved a possible $91.2m foreign military sale of extended range guided multiple launch rocket systems and associated equipment to Finland.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified the US Congress about this possible sale.

The move comes after the Government of Finland placed a request for 25 M30A2 Extended Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems – Alternative Warhead (ER GMLRS-AW) Pods, in addition to ten M31A2 Extended Range Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems – Unitary (ER GMLRS-U) Pods.

The potential sale will include ER GMLRS Materiel Release Package, Stockpile Reliability Program (SRP) support, Quality Assurance Testing (QAT) services, technical publications, as well as other technical and logistics support services.

Lockheed Martin’s Missile and Fire Control business will be the principal contractor for the deal.

The addition of the materiel is aligned with Finland’s plan to expand its existing army architecture and upgrade its capabilities to counter potential threats. It will also improve interoperability between Finland, the US and other partners.

In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by improving the security of a trusted partner, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.

“It is vital to the US national interest to assist Finland in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.”

It added that the proposed sale will not alter the basic military balance in the region or affect US defence readiness.

Earlier this month, the US State Department approved a possible foreign military sale of ultra high-frequency satellite communications radio systems and related equipment to the Nato Communications and Information Agency.
