If approved, the package will also include the delivery of communications, ancillary support, tools and test equipment, as well as range and test programmes.

Additionally, it will include the supply of spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, training equipment, in addition to training and associated services.

Raytheon and Lockheed-Martin will be the prime contractors for this programme, which is expected to be valued at around $2.2bn.

The induction of the Patriot missile system is expected to enhance Switzerland’s missile defence capability and contribute to regional stability.

In a statement, Defense Security Cooperation Agency said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to improve the security of a friendly European nation, which is an important force for political stability and economic progress within Europe.”

Last month, the US State Department approved the potential sale of the Patriot missile system to the Netherlands.
