The US Department of Defense (DoD) has authorised an additional ten Type 2 teams to support the ongoing Covid-19 vaccination administration efforts.

The move comes in response to a request from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as part of the agency’s Covid-19 vaccination efforts.

The additional personnel will support FEMA at vaccination sites around the country, said Pentagon press secretary John Kirby at a press briefing on 5 March.

The agency asked for 50 Type 1 teams and 50 Type 2 teams to support community vaccination centres.

Type 1 team consists of 222 service members and Type 2 team is made up of 139 members.

The teams can administer approximately 6,000 and 3,000 vaccinations a day respectively.

In addition, the department is staffing teams comprising 25 people in certain sites.

Currently, some 6,235 active duty service members have been identified by the DoD to support Covid-19 vaccination centres.

However, not all these members have deployed yet as part of a team, said DoD.

Only 2,200 service members have been deployed currently in 17 teams to California, New Jersey, Florida, New York, the US Virgin Islands, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

These teams comprise service members from the US army, navy, airforce and marine corps.

Kirby said that additional teams of about 444 service members will be deployed to both Ohio and Georgia to support the states’ vaccination efforts, to provide nearly 12,000 vaccinations a day.

Last month, the first community vaccination centre to be supported by the US Army troops opened at California State University in Los Angeles.
