The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has selected Northrop Grumman for the agency’s Electronics Resurgence Initiative (ERI), with a potential worth of more than $1.5bn.

Led by DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office, the research initiative will be carried out for a period of five years by Northrop together with other selected research teams.

Northrop Grumman, along with subcontractor JITX, is one of the 11 participants selected to carry out research on the Intelligent Design of Electronic Assets programme, which is one of the efforts designed as part of the ERI.

Under the deal, the company will focus on developing an automated electronic circuit layout generator that would help users with no experience create circuit designs ready for production within 24 hours.

The technology could reduce design times for electronic circuitry from potentially years to a single day.

“Our ERI partnership with DARPA is an important step toward maintaining the nation’s leadership in electronics and improving national security.”

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Advanced Technologies vice-president Vern Boyle said: “Northrop Grumman is at the forefront of microelectronics and next-generation computing.

“Our ERI partnership with DARPA is an important step toward maintaining the nation’s leadership in electronics and improving national security.”

Established last year, the DARPA initiative is composed of existing programmes in addition to six new programmes, two for each of the three major research thrusts.

The ERI has been designed to support the advancement of the US semiconductors, particularly in the areas of microsystem materials, designs, architectures and integration.

The initiative is expected to boost innovation in the microelectronics industry while ensuring technical superiority and strengthening national defence.
