The US Army has awarded an $828m contract for the new lot of production of guided multiple launch rocket system (GMLRS) rockets and associated equipment.

Awarded to Lockheed Martin, the contract covers Lot 13 production of GMLRS alternative warhead (AW), GMLRS unitary, and reduced-range practice rockets (RRPR).

Under the deal, the company will also be responsible for providing integrated logistics support for the US Army, in addition to GMLRS rounds for a number of international customers.

Lockheed Martin precision fires and combat manoeuvre systems vice-president Gaylia Campbell said: “The GMLRS round continues to perform exceptionally well for our customers.

“Designed for fast deployment, the GMLRS is an all-weather rocket that offers precision strike beyond the reach of most conventional weapons.”

“And we are always executing continuous improvement initiatives to enhance performance, range and affordability of these critical rounds to assure they remain the preferred precision-strike option for our warfighters.”

Work on the project will be carried out at the company’s manufacturing facilities in Dallas and its Precision Fires Center of Excellence in Camden, Arkansas, US.

Designed for fast deployment, the GMLRS is an all-weather rocket that offers precision strike beyond the reach of most conventional weapons.

Lockheed Martin’s GMLRS AW was the first munition manufactured to service area targets without unexploded ordinance.

The GMLRS unitary rockets are used to significantly exceed the required combat reliability rate, while the RRPR allow users to train with realistic, full-motored rockets with limited flight range, making them suitable for smaller testing ranges.

During combat operations, the GMLRS rockets are integrated into Multiple Launch Rocket System pods and fired from the company’s High Mobility Artillery Rocket System or M270 family of launchers.
