The US Army is assembling a field hospital with 250 beds at the CenturyLink Event Center in Seattle for the treatment of non-Covid-19 patients.

Expected to open next week, the army field hospital will enable local hospitals to free up their beds for people infected with Covid-19.

US Army Colonel Hope Williamson-Younce said: “We have medical doctors, nurses and support staff from all over the world, they mobilised in a moment’s notice to support the American people.”

Approximately 500 military medical personnel from multiple units are involved in the field hospital.

Additionally, 627th Hospital Center’s 10th Field Hospital; the 47th Combat Area Support Hospital; the 520th Area Support Medical Company and the 62nd Medical Brigade are involved.

US Army 10th Field Hospital unit will provide 148 beds to the facility. The unit has 48 intensive care unit beds, an emergency room and operating suites.

The hospital also has a microbiology unit, a lab, blood banking capability, X-ray capability and services for mental and spiritual health.

Set up of the field hospital is currently underway and it is expected to be ready for treatment by next week.

US Army 10th Field Hospital commander Army lieutenant colonel Jason Hughes said: “While we’re building this hospital, we have the clinical teams integrated and discussing with the Department of Health here at Washington state and the local medical community to make sure that we do this the right way and the patients that come here get the care they deserve without compromising this facility.”

Some army personnel have been assigned for the construction of the facility.

As a precautionary measure, patients will be screened for Covid-19 twice, at the referring hospital and then at the field hospital to ensure they are not affected with the virus.
