The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that its mercury radio system has attained full operational capability (FOC).

The mercury radio system is currently in service with the UK Army Cadet Force (ACF). It was delivered by Israel-based Elbit Systems in partnership with Drumgrange.

Extensive hardware and software upgrades were provided to the MoD for effective radio performance and compliance with high safety requirements.

UK MoD Battlefield Tactical Communications and Information Systems (BATCIS) delivery team head brigadier Richard Spencer said: “The delivery of this capability to exacting time, cost and performance parameters is a real success story and I am delighted to see the radios now in the hands of both the cadets and instructors.”

“The firms have delivered battery charging and ancillary equipment to facilitate practical field-craft and signals training along with a command and control capability.”

To date, the two companies have supplied more than 3,000 PRC 710 very high-frequency (VHF) radios and amplifier sets, and 150 PRC 720 HF manpack radios.

In addition, the firms have delivered battery charging and ancillary equipment to facilitate practical field-craft and signals training along with a command and control capability.
