The UK Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) has launched the latest iteration in the Army Warfighting Experiment (AWE) series to identify emerging technology for defence applications.

AWE 2020 (AWE20) seeks to explore emerging technology in areas such as agile command, control and communication.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been conducting the AWE experimentation series for the last ten years.

The MoD said: “It has consistently delivered high-quality evidence for the army and invaluable military feedback to industry. It explores technology suitable for exploitation in the short-to-medium term.

“It pushes the boundaries of technology and military capability, testing a range of prototype systems by putting them in the hands of the user while giving invaluable military feedback to industry.”

In a request for information (RFI) for AWE20 issued in July, the army stated that it is looking to tap developments in the agile command, control and communication (Agile C3) space.

Agile C3 is seen as a key potential contributor to guide strategic, joint and command force development.

Through the event, the army is looking for technology that can operate in complex environments.

The DE&S will engage will the industry at the event on battlefield headquarters aspects ranging from ‘deployable infrastructure, data aggregation and analytics to HQ resilience and decision support’.

AWE20 intends to identify capability and knowledge gaps and explore technology that can be exploited rapidly.

The event will look for answers on questions such as how technology can be leveraged to improve data exploitation for situational awareness and understanding and how it can lead to faster decision making.

AWE20 will also discuss how technology can make HQs less detectable and more agile.
