Aerospace and defence company ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS) has collaborated with Lockheed Martin to deliver a territorial ballistic missile defence (BMD) command and control capability for the NATO alliance.

Operational since 1 June 2001, TRS is an equally owned transatlantic joint venture (JV) established by Raytheon and Thales.

The project aims at upgrading, testing and integrating the Nato command and control (C2) systems and underlying communication network to facilitate exchange of information between a range of NATO and national missile defence systems.

The C2 system will enable NATO forces, both deployed within and beyond the alliance’s area of responsibility, to defend NATO populations and territories.

Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) vice-president Dr Rob Smith said: “Lockheed Martin delivered the Defence Design System for NATO’s BMD planning capability.

“We will leverage that success, as well as our expertise in command and control, weapon system development and systems integration to achieve the Alliance goals.”

“Lockheed’s success in delivering the C2 capability for US BMD system is a result of our focus on end user needs. We delivered a very complex C2 capability that is intuitive and effective for mission execution. We accomplished this in partnership with Raytheon and other US companies and we look forward to delivering this capability with Thales and TRS.”

The decision to develop an effective missile defence capability that would help protect all European populations and territories against ballistic missile attacks was taken by NATO leaders at the 2010 Lisbon Summit.

TRS focuses on the development of air defence / command and control centres, in addition to ground-based air surveillance and weapons-locating radars.
