Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has awarded a follow-on order to Saab for the delivery of new self-protection systems for the Indian Army’s Dhruv helicopter.

Valued at Skr350m ($39.16m), the order includes delivery of the integrated defensive aid suite 2 (IDAS-2).

With deliveries scheduled to start next year, production of the self-protection systems are slated to be carried out at Saab’s manufacturing facility in Centurion, South Africa.

The IDAS protection suite has been developed to deliver platform self-protection for platforms such as rotary and fixed-wing aircraft in modern, diverse and challenging threat environments.

The Indian Army’s Dhruv helicopter is a twin engine, multi-role, multi-mission advanced light helicopter (ALH), with major variants classified as Dhruv Mk-I, Mk-II, Mk-III & Mk-IV.

Certification of the helicopter’s utility military variant was completed in 2002.
