Saab has signed a multi-year framework agreement to deliver the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon system to the US Army.

Under the three-year contract, the US Army can place orders for Carl-Gustaf M4 systems for a total amount of nearly Skr380m ($40.9m).

The value of the first delivery order is approximately Skr170m ($19m) and the company has not disclosed the number of units to be delivered. Saab expects to hand over the systems to the service this year.

Saab business area Dynamics head Görgen Johansson said: “This agreement is the result of many years of great cooperation between Saab and the US Government. The order clearly demonstrates the confidence that the user has both in the capability of the Carl-Gustaf system, as well as in Saab as a supplier.”

“The game-changing capabilities of this weapon system and the flexibility provided by the multiple munition types available to the operator will deliver even greater value.”

Designated M3E1 in the US, the M4 man-portable shoulder-launched multirole weapon system is the latest version of the combat-proven Carl-Gustaf 84mm recoilless rifle.

The Carl-Gustaf M4 features several significant improvements such as reduced launcher weight of less than 7kg and complete backwards compatibility with a range of ammunition.

Saab Defense and Security US president and CEO Erik Smith said: “The Carl-Gustaf has been a force multiplier and the support weapon of choice for US Special Operations forces for many years.

“With the system now being fielded to light infantry units in multiple theatres and now to the US Marines as well, the game-changing capabilities of this weapon system and the flexibility provided by the multiple munition types available to the operator will deliver even greater value to the American warfighter.”
