Saab and Raytheon have completed test firings of Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition, marking another milestone in the laser-guided system’s transition to production.

The companies conducted a series of guided flight tests for the shoulder-fired weapon system at Saab’s Bofors Test Centre in Sweden and the Mile High Range in the US.

Equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system, the Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition performed in line with expectations in 11 flight tests, Raytheon said.

In a statement, Saab said that two munitions were fired against static targets during the tests, while one was against a moving target.

Tests also demonstrated other seeker technologies and dynamic warhead against a range of targets.

Saab’s Carl-Gustaf weapon system is being used by the US Army and more than 40 other countries.

The guided munition will provide the capability to accurately engage stationary or moving targets at distances of up to 2,000m.

The weapon system offers an enhanced range to allow troops to fire at targets from inside structures, increasing protection of the ground forces.

Saab Dynamics business area head Görgen Johansson said: “The Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition is a next step in the evolution of the Carl-Gustaf system.

“It will be the most advanced Carl-Gustaf munition yet and will offer greater precision, minimise collateral damage and deliver outstanding performance with pin-point accuracy and multi-target capability.”

The Guided Carl-Gustaf munition is expected to enhance the capability of the Carl-Gustaf. It is being developed to meet the needs of the US Special Operations Command.

In October last year, the two companies were awarded a contract by the US Army to demonstrate a guided munition for the Carl-Gustaf weapon system.

Saab partnered with Raytheon in 2017 to jointly develop new weapons for infantry forces. The companies intend to test an all-up round in 2020.

Raytheon Land Warfare Systems vice-president Sam Deneke said: “Raytheon and Saab have spent the last 12 months working together to develop a precision-guided munition that will penetrate multiple targets such as light armour, bunkers and concrete structures at extended ranges.

“This lightweight round can overmatch potential adversaries while decreasing collateral damage, making it an ideal weapon when fighting under restricted rules of engagement.”
