Rheinmetall has been contracted to upgrade the German Bundeswehr’s 27 additional Boxer command vehicles to the A2 standard.

The latest contract was awarded by Germany’s Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) last month.

It is the second lot of Bundeswehr’s initiative to modernise its total 65 Boxer multipurpose armoured transport vehicles fleet.

Under the first lot, Rheinmetall received contract to modernise 38 Boxer command vehicles for the Bundeswehr in 2017.

Modernisation work on the 27 Boxer command vehicles will be carried out at Rheinmetall Landsysteme plant in Kassel, Germany.

It is expected to start next month. The updated vehicles will be returned to the Bundeswehr during the 2022-2024 period.

The upgrade to A2 status will cover the driver’s visualisation system, the exhaust emission, air-conditioning ducts, towing gear, driver’s station, headlight technology, and software and system security modifications.

The vehicle’s satellite communications capability, voice and data transmission and information technology (IT) equipment will be improved.

There are four variants of the combat-proven high-mobility Boxer armoured transport vehicle.

According to Rheinmetall, the command vehicle is one of the variants known as FüFz in the German military.

Deployed in mechanised formations, the vehicle is equipped with an entire array of radio equipment and advanced command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence (C4I) systems.

It is fielded as a mobile tactical operation centre or command post.

In June 2019, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) received a contract from the German Bundeswehr to deliver 252 unprotected transport vehicles.
