Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract to upgrade the German Army Aviation Corps’ NH90 tactical transport helicopter flight simulators.

The modernisation contract was signed in December 2019 and will be valid until 2027.

It was awarded to Helicopter Flight Training Systems (HFTS), in which CAE, Airbus Helicopters, Rheinmetall and Thales are the shareholders and partners.

The agreement includes operation, service and maintenance of the simulators, with a guaranteed availability rate of at least 98%.

Rheinmetall’s share in the order falls under the lower double-digit million euro range.

Under the deal, systems will be updated to complement the current configuration of the NH90 (MR1).

German Bundeswehr has selected the HFTS team based on its prior experience in operating its NH90 simulators.

HFTS was established in 2004 and currently operates NH90 full-mission simulators in Bückeburg, Fassberg and Holzdorf.

Rheinmetall has also provided several training systems for NH90 ground personnel.

In August last year, Airbus Helicopters won a ten-year contract to support the German Armed Forces’ (Bundeswehr) NH90 fleet.

Last May, an inspection test was conducted of an NH90 transport helicopter for the German Bundeswehr by RUAG MRO International.

The NH90 tactical transport helicopter is a modern, military, multi-role aircraft designed by Nato standards.

The helicopter has been developed in two versions, namely tactical troop transport (TTH) and Nato frigate helicopter (NFH).
