Finnish firm Patria has finalised the fire-on-the-move capability for the land-based variant of Patria Nemo, a single-barrelled remote-controlled mortar turret system.

The capability will enable troops to constantly move the mortar system during fire missions, avoiding direct counter hits from the enemy.

Patria weapon systems vice-president Kari Reunamäki said: “Patria has originally developed the fire-on-the-move capability for Patria Nemo Navy version several years ago, but due to tightened customer expectations and the prospects of the battlefield, the development was taken a step further.”

Patria Nemo is a turreted, lightweight 120mm mortar system capable of direct and indirect fire missions. It weighs around 1,900kg and offers a full 360º traverse and weapon elevation from -3° up to 85°.

The mortar system, which can be installed on wheeled armoured vehicles or naval vessels, is capable of firing six grenade multiple rounds impact fire missions simultaneously.

According to the company, a vehicle equipped with Patria Nemo can stow 50-60 rounds of 120mm ammunition, based on the platform.

Last May, Patria and the US Army agreed to conduct the feasibility study of Patria Nemo and later decided to undertake a Foreign Comparative Testing (FCT) programme for the mortar system.

Under the FCT, several tests and demonstrations are set to be carried out in the US and Finland to assess the mortar system’s compatibility with the US ammunition.

They will also check if the system meets the requirements of the US.
