Parsons and Battelle are working together to disinfect N-95 masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE) to support relief efforts across the US caused due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The companies have joined forces to operate the Battelle CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System, which disinfects the personal protective gear.

Parsons is mobilising field crews to operate units using a hydrogen peroxide mist to decontaminate masks.

Each unit can disinfect up to 80,000 masks per day. This increases the potential reuse of masks to up to 20 times.

It will also reduce the shortage of masks and other PPE caused during the pandemic.

Parsons industrial market executive vice-president Jon Moretta said: “Never has our corporate purpose of delivering a better world been more important or more necessary than it is today.

“We are supporting the immediate deployment of this decontamination technology to where it’s needed most, helping protect the medical community and first responders as they care for patients.”

The Battelle CCDS, which has been designed to work on N95 respirators for the removal of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, addresses the current shortage of critical PPE across the US.

It is capable of decontaminating the same respirator multiple times without degrading N95 respirator performance.

Earlier this month, Parsons won a contract from the Intelligence Community (IC) to provide the security assessment and protection of systems.

Under the $32m two-year contract, the company will protect critical infrastructure globally. This will be done through a comprehensive analysis of risk and by deploying physical and technical security countermeasures.
