Oshkosh Defense has received a contract to recapitalise the fleet of US Army heavy tactical vehicles.

Awarded by the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM), the $232.7m delivery order covers the recapitalisation of 407 heavy expanded mobility tactical trucks (HEMTT) and palletised load system (PLS) trucks. The contract also includes the production of 601 new PLS trailers.

Oshkosh Defense US Army and US Marine Corps programmes vice-president and general manager Pat Williams said: “As the backbone of the US Army’s resupply and distribution system, the HEMTT and PLS vehicles are heavily relied on to carry munitions and other critical supplies across all types of terrains and in all types of environments.”

“We are proud that the US Army has trusted Oshkosh to provide this cost-effective recapitalisation service for over two decades.

The recapitalisation process involves the heavily used vehicles being stripped to the frame rails and then completely rebuilt to a like-new condition.

The US Army heavy tactical vehicles recapitalisation contract involves the vehicles being rebuilt to the latest configuration with the same technology, safety features, bumper-to-bumper warranty and lifecycle cost advantage of a new vehicle.

“The recapitalisation contract involves the vehicles being rebuilt to the latest configuration with the same technology, safety features, bumper-to-bumper warranty and lifecycle cost advantage of a new vehicle.”

Williams told Army Technology: “Oshkosh recapitalisation services offer significant cost savings to the US Army by returning vehicles to current operational readiness with the same performance, safety and life-cycle costs advantages of a new vehicle.

“Recapitalised vehicles are put through the same extensive road tests, performance tests, and inspection procedures as new vehicles and then returned to field operations with the latest upgrades and a new bumper-to-bumper warranty.

“Production under the individual delivery orders that were recently awarded will be completed by October 2020.”

Vehicles will be returned to the fleet in the same zero-mile, zero-hour condition as new production vehicles.

Oshkosh Defense has recapitalised more than 12,500 HEMTTs and 3,000 PLS trucks for the US Army since 1995, with a similar contract awarded to Oshkosh in 2011.

Williams added: “As the original equipment manufacturer, we know these vehicles inside and out, and we are in the best position to quickly return them to field operations in like-new condition.”

The US Army has been using the HEMTT and PLS since 1981 and 1990 respectively.
