North Korea has test fired a new type of anti-aircraft missile, just days after it tested a new hypersonic weapon system.

The launch was conducted under the presence of Pak Jong Chon, a member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, and other officials.

According to state news media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the anti-aircraft missile was launched to assess the performance of the weapon system.

It also confirmed the operational practicality of the launcher, radar and all-purpose battle command vehicle, the statement added.

The missile incorporated new technologies such as twin-rudder control technology and double-impulse flight engine.

Following the test, the South Korean military told Reuters that a detailed analysis is required to ascertain the KCNA report.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the tests increase instability in the region.

He was quoted by AFP as saying to the reporters: “We’re concerned about these repeated violations of security council resolutions that create, I think, greater prospects for instability and insecurity.

“We’re evaluating and assessing the launches to understand exactly what they did, what technology they used, but regardless, we’ve seen repeated violations now of UN Security Council resolutions that the international community needs to take very seriously.”

Recently, North Korea has significantly ramped up testing of its weapons systems. In addition to testing hypersonic missile, the nation also test-fired ballistic missiles and long-range cruise missiles in the last month.

Earlier this week, KCNA said that the tests are intended to bolster the country’s self-defence capabilities while announcing the launch of the hypersonic missile Hwasong 8.
