Nato Mission Iraq (NMI) Polish contingent has successfully managed the delivery of additional medical assistance to Iraq.

The aid included 1,000l of disinfectant to support Iraq in its battle against the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

This is the second donation made by the Republic of Poland. It follows a request from Iraq through Nato’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC).

Last month, Poland donated 50,000 masks to Iraq.

Aid-delivery was marked by a ceremony at the Iraqi military base at Taji, attended by Iraqi senior civilian and military officials, Polish representatives, and personnel of the NMI and of the Combined Joint Task Force of the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve.

Nato’s main civil emergency response mechanism, the EADRCC, coordinates requests and offers of assistance.

During the pandemic, the centre has coordinated requests from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and 16 Nato and partner countries.

Launched in Iraq in 2018, the NMI is a non-combat advising, training and capacity-building mission formed by Nato leaders at the Brussels Summit.

The mission comprises trainers, advisors and supporting personnel from Allied and partner countries including Australia, Sweden and Finland.

Nato and Iraq have partnered to continue their common fight against terrorism.

Last week, Nato announced the opening of its infrastructure facility for allied troops at the Tapa Base in Estonia.

Built with a €20m ($22.5m) investment, the project received majority funding through the Nato Security Investment Programme (NSIP).
