United Nations (UN) secretary-general António Guterres has condemned the recent bombing in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, which killed at least 200 people and injured several others.

Two explosions occurred on Saturday, which involved a truck carrying a large amount of military-grade and homemade explosives, The Guardian reported citing Associated Press.

A large car bomb was detonated outside the entrance to a hotel in the city’s K5 junction, which is home to a number of government offices, hotels and restaurants.

A second bombing was reported later in the day in the city’s Madina district, UN reported citing media sources.

Guterres requested all Somalis “to unite in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, and work together in building a functional and inclusive federal state.”

“The international community will do everything possible to help the people and Government of Somalia to overcome this tragedy.”

Commenting on the attack, the UN secretary-general’s special representative in Somalia Michael Keating said: “It is a revolting attack both in terms of its intent and impact.

The bombing follows US President Donald Trump’s decision in April to authorise the US Department of Defense (DoD) to provide additional precision fires in support of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which allows US troops to support Somali security forces in their fight against the al-Shabab militant group.

AMISOM is a regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union in Somalia with the approval of the United Nations (UN).
