Vencore Labs has been contracted to support Dispersed Computing (DCOMP) programme for the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

Under the $10.3m contract, the company is responsible for providing research and development services in support of DCOMP programme.

Vencore Labs president Petros Mouchtaris said: “This work leverages Vencore Labs’ industry-leading expertise in networking and analytics.

“We look forward to expanding our relationship with DARPA to bring them an innovative solution in support of this important mission.”

The programme seeks to deal with the cost and latency issues of data computation in a rugged, operational environment where network connectivity and power is limited.

It is aimed at designing systems that can operate in environments where network connectivity is highly variable and degraded.

Using dispersed computing systems, the DCOMP programme would create software instantiations of protocol stacks and algorithms to improve the performance of networks and applications.

"We look forward to expanding our relationship with DARPA to bring them an innovative solution in support of this important mission."

Vencore stated that it aims to provide DARPA with innovation in network protocols as part of the cost-plus-fixed-fee contract.

Specifically, the company proposes a solution using programmable network elements that collect in-path network data for analytics and uses these with programmable protocol logic to boost network performance.

Work under the contract will be carried out in Basking Ridge, New Jersey through 2021.

Vencore Labs is a research centre that provides applied research and engineering services, enabling government agencies, utilities and commercial enterprises to fully exploit the future of communications, data analytics and cyber-security.
