Ukraine and the US have concluded an annual, multinational training exercise known as Rapid Trident 2019 (RT19) in Yavoriv, Ukraine.

RT19 took place from 13-28 September and involved more than 3,700 troops from 14 nations.

The exercise was designed to support combined interoperability among the defence forces of the US and Ukraine, as well as Partnership for Peace countries and Nato allies.

The US and Ukrainian forces conducted a water gap crossing demonstration and their first-ever joint live-fire exercise during the RT19.

Before the exercise began, the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) imparted training to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) 2nd Brigade 26th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion commander lieutenant colonel Michael Starz said: “We came here as mentors. We take a lot of pride in the fact that brigades leave here to fight in the conflict in the east.”

The training exercised helped the participating units in their efforts to comply with Nato standards.

The Ukrainian Forces will head to the east for their ongoing war.

Armed Forces of Ukraine Civilian Defense Battalion deputy commander major Artem Karpus said: “We use sample scenarios, we use multinational [equipment] and we plan future actions together with our colleagues.

“We use Nato standards because it is important for us and because we want to be professionals.”

The Ukrainian Forces received training in decontamination of military vehicles, room clearing techniques and medical skills.

The live-fire demonstration included Ukrainian BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles and US high-mobility multi-wheeled vehicles.

The US vehicles provided fire support during the exercise with M-2 .50 calibre guns and M-240B machine guns mounted on the turrets.
