Multinational exercise Slovak Shield 2018 is set to begin next month, with Slovakia as the host nation.

Around 1,500 Slovak soldiers and troops from abroad are expected to take part in this year’s exercise, which will be held from 14 to 28 September.

The exercise, which is considered to be one of the most significant military exercises in the environment of Central Europe, will be focused on training military personnel in response to current security threats.

As well as Slovakian forces, soldiers of the Visegrad Group (V4) armed forces, members of the Indiana National Guard (INNG), and personnel from the United States Army Europe (USAREUR) will participate in the exercise.

V4 is an alliance of four Central European states, comprising the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.

In the build up to the international exercise, the Slovak Armed Forces are gearing up to make sure the country is prepared to conduct the event smoothly. The country is hosting the annual exercise for the fourth time.

In May this year, a planning conference was conducted to discuss aligning, planning and preparing the execution of the exercise.

During Slovak Shield 2018, personnel will practice tactical and operational capabilities.

Other focus areas of the exercise will include improving the ability of commanders at all levels of C2; and imparting training to HQ and Staff members of 2nd Mechanised Brigade.

In addition, HQ Air Component and HQ Task Force Group staff will be prepared and trained.

The exercise will be conducted at multiple facilities in the country, including the Training Centre Lešť, and Simulation Centre of General M. R. Štefánik Armed Forces Academy in Liptovský Mikuláš.
