Milrem offers Type-X robotic combat vehicle for US Army’s RCV-M programme

European developer Milrem Robotics has decided to offer its Type-X robotic combat vehicle (RCV) at Military Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) USA Conference 2021.

The combat vehicle is being presented for the US Army’s RCV-Medium (RCV-M) programme.

The Military RAS USA Conference, which will take place virtually from 21-22 June, will provide a forum for the military robotics community.

It will gather and share new opportunities and explore the evolving challenges in this rapidly changing area.

The US Army’s RCV programme seeks to demonstrate the effectiveness of manned-unmanned teaming using a future optionally manned fighting vehicle (OMFV) capable of controlling multiple RCV ‘wingmen’ in battlefields.

RCV-M is a 2,500lb diesel-electric hybrid vehicle. It is equipped with a remotely operated 30mm cannon and can move at 25mph.

Last month, the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) took delivery of the fourth and final RCV-M prototype.

Milrem Robotics Engineering Systems head Sverker Svärdby said: “The Type-X is designed to be upgradable to meet the needs and requirements of various armed forces. That is one of its most unique features.

“Thanks to this, the Type-X will fit nicely into to RCV-M programme and will be able to support amphibious missions.”

The Milrem vehicle features follow-me, waypoint navigation and detection of obstacle with artificial intelligence functions, as well as indirect drive for remote-controlled operations at high speeds.

In addition, the firepower and tactical use capabilities offered by Type-X RCV is equal or greater when compared to the abilities provided to a mechanised unit with infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).

The Type-X RCV allows the unit to break through enemy defensive positions with low risk to own troops.

The vehicle provides low lifecycle costs and logistical footprint due to its intelligent predictive maintenance, health and usage monitoring system and line replacement unit principle, as well as hybrid powertrain and rubber tracks.

Milrem Robotics leveraged its knowledge gained from its ‘Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System’ (THeMIS) unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for the Type-X RCV development.

THeMIS is a multi-mission UGV designed to perform a wide range of military missions in dangerous environments.

Last month, Milrem Robotics and battle tank and combat system provider Krauss-Maffei Wegmann signed a strategic cooperation agreement. This contract defines the provision of a minority stake of 24.9% in Milrem Robotics to KMW.
