The US Department of Defense (DoD) has selected four awardees to provide grants in support of its Manufacturing Engineering Education Program (MEEP).

Battelle Education, Clemson University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining will receive a total grant of $5.78m over a period of three years.

The grant will be used to support or establish educational programmes to promote manufacturing engineering education.

MEEP has been designed to establish programmes that would better position the current and next-generation manufacturing workforce to generate new military systems and components. These are aimed to ensure technological advancement for the US DoD.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle Education is expected to use public-private partnerships to encourage manufacturing engineering education at high school level.

MIT will be committed to promoting a comprehensive 15-month apprenticeship training programme in support of a highly skilled manufacturing workforce.

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining will develop and launch a range of new virtual courses, including additive manufacturing and related technologies.
