Lockheed Martin has successfully carried out a controlled flight test of its miniature hit-to-kill (MHTK) missile to demonstrate the interceptor’s enhanced capability.

Conducted at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, the test also helped validate the performance of the mini missile’s latest and advanced airframe and upgraded electronics for the first time.

The interceptor’s ability to defeat rocket, artillery and mortar (RAM) targets is enhanced by its improved precision, reliability and range.

The commonality between MHTK missile’s active and semi-active configurations and its enhanced agility demonstrate it’s advanced technology compared to the existing systems.

“This test is exciting because it is another successful milestone demonstrating the interceptor’s revolutionary capabilities.”

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control of Integrated Air and Missile Defense vice-president Tim Cahill said: “The US Army and international customers have made it clear that today’s global security environment demands agile, close-range solutions that protect warfighters and citizens from enemy rockets, artillery and mortars.

“The design of the MHTK interceptor enables a highly effective solution in a very compact package.

The less than 2.5ft-long MHTK missile is capable of retaining the range and impact needed for a counter-RAM solution.

Hit-to-kill technology helps destroy threats through a precise application of kinetic energy in body-to-body contact. It removes the incoming threat and mitigates the risk of collateral damage typical of traditional blast-fragmentation interceptors.
