The Ministry of National Defence Republic of Lithuania is set to upgrade its RBS 70 man-portable air-defence system with night-sight capability and new missiles.

To this end, the Lithuanian Defence Ministry has awarded two new orders to Saab for the delivery of advanced missile systems and BORC night-capability sights to be integrated on to the RBS 70.

With the total value amounting to approximately Skr100m ($10.93m), deliveries under the orders are expected to take place next year.

Saab Dynamics Business Area head Görgen Johansson said: “We welcome the decision by the Lithuanian Armed Forces to continue investing in the RBS 70 system.

“By adding BORC sights to the country’s current inventory, Lithuania gets an even more capable system with the additional ability to operate in darkness.”

The Lithuanian Armed Forces, which is already using the RBS 70 air-defence system, is currently purchasing enhanced capability with greater range, higher-altitude coverage and an improved effect against armoured targets in addition to night-time capability.

To date, a total of 19 countries across the globe have acquired more than 1,600 units of the RBS 70 systems, including more than 18,000 missile systems.

Developed by Saab-Bofors in Sweden, RBS 70 is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system that can be used by army personnel such as infantry and paratroopers to provide them with an equaliser against hostile aircraft and helicopters.
