The Government of the Republic of Lithuania has approved the decision to continue offering financial support to the Afghan National Security Forces from 2018 to 2020.

Lithuania has approved the allocation of approximately €415,000 to support the maintenance and development of the Afghan National Security Forces.

The US is the main contributor to the trust fund that the money will be transferred to.

In addition, the Republic of Lithuania will be participating in the Nato-led multinational Resolute Support operation in Afghanistan with an aim to help train the Afghan National Security Forces.

“The existing Lithuanian contingent in Herat and Kabul, Afghanistan, will be replaced by a new rotation.”

The country intends to send 29 soldiers in the Nato-led operation. It will also look into the possibility of increasing the number if more support is required.

In addition, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania authorised the deployment of up to 50 personnel to the Resolute Support operation.

Launched in 2015, the operation is a Nato effort taken to train and assist the Afghan National Security Forces along with some of the ministries of the country.

It has replaced the combat International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) mission that was carried out over more than a decade.
