The US Army has awarded $841.3m to Leonardo DRS for the production of the next-generation mission command computing system, the Mounted Family of Computer Systems (MFoCS) II.

The contract has been awarded by the Defense Information Technology Contracting Office of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) on behalf of US Army Program Manager, Mission Command and US Army Program Executive Office–Command, Control and Communications–Tactical (PEO C3T).

The five-year award, which can be extended, is part of an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract.

Under the deal, Leonardo DRS will be responsible for delivering dismountable tablets, processor units, docking stations, keyboard units, interconnecting cables and several sizes of ruggedised sunlight-readable multi-touch-screen display units to the army.

The MFoCS II system has been designed to support the army’s modernisation plan for tactical platforms, including ground combat vehicles and command posts.

“MFoCS II was designed to meet the demanding requirements of mission-critical reliability in the most demanding environments, combined with robust security enhancements to ensure trusted performance.”

DRS Land Electronics Business vice-president and general manager Jerry Hathaway said: “As the service embarks on accelerated modernisation efforts, we know that our proven platform-based capabilities serve as a critical enabler of Army Mission Command and the Army Network.

“MFoCS II was designed to meet the demanding requirements of mission-critical reliability in the most demanding environments, combined with robust security enhancements to ensure trusted performance today and into the future.”

Featuring critical system capability upgrades, cybersecurity enhancements, and multi-touch displays, the new solution will support the continued fielding and upgrades of the US Army’s Joint Battle Command–Platform (JBC-P).

MFoCS II offers a common family of interoperable network computing and touch-screen display products that are developed to deliver cost-effective commercial off-the-shelf technology with the mission-critical reliability required to enable platform-centric tactical mission command.

Work on the project will be carried out at the company’s manufacturing facility in Melbourne, Florida, US.

In July last year, Leonardo DRS secured orders, valued at more than $53m, from the US Army’s Mission Command Program Office for the MFoCS system.
