KRAS (Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems) has signed a $100m order with Rafael Advanced Defence Systems to manufacture 1,000 Barak 8 missile systems for the Indian Armed Forces.

KRAS is a joint venture between Israeli state-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems and Indian defence company Kalyani Strategic Systems with Rafael investing heavily in facilities and life-cycle support in India.

The Barak 8 surface-to-air missile (SAM) is intended for use against a variety of threats including aircraft, UAVs and ballistic missiles. It was developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Israel’s Israel Aircraft Industry (IAI).

Rafael Advanced Defence Systems head of air defence systems Pini Yungman said: “We at Rafael are proud of our role – not only in KRAS – but also of our participation in Make-in-India, and our strong relationship with the vibrant talent across India.

“As we mark the end of this project, we look forward to celebrating many more milestones with KRAS, as well as with our many other partners in India.”
