Indo-Thailand joint military exercise Maitree 2018 has commenced in Thailand’s Chachoengsao Province to enhance interoperability between forces from both countries.

The bilateral platoon level exercise between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army comprises infantry component and will be conducted until 19 August this year.

The personnel kicked off the event with familiarisation of organisation and display of weapons and equipment of both armies.

During the course of the exercise, forces will have an opportunity to improve their tactical and technical skills in joint counter insurgency and counter terrorist operations in rural and urban scenario as mandated by the United Nations (UN).

Exercise Maitree will also focus on increasing interoperability between the countries and involves joint training, planning and execution of a host of tactical drills designed to offset likely threats that may be encountered in urban warfare scenario.

Furthermore, the military drill will also see experts from both sides sharing their experience on varied topics for mutual benefit.

In a statement, the Indian Ministry of Defence said: “Exercise Maitree will contribute immensely in developing mutual understanding and bonhomie between the two armies in order to counter terrorism.”

The current drill comes after both sides participated in Ex Maitree 2017 in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh for 15 days.

According to The New Indian Express, the two armies are scheduled to take part in the first military exercise of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to be hosted by India next month.

BIMSTEC members include India, Bangladesh, Bhutan Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
