The Indian Army has carried out the test firing of the land-attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

The test was carried out from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 24 November. ANI reported that the missile hit the intended target, which was on another island.

The BrahMos missile strike range has increased to more than 400km.

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has recently increased the range of the missile system to over 450km.

The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is said to be the fastest operational system in its class in the world.

In September, India tested the extended-range variant of BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile.

The test was conducted at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Balasore, in the state of Odisha, where the BrahMos Land-Attack Cruise Missile (LACM) achieved a top speed of Mach 2.8.

BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India and Russia. The original version has a range of around 290km and has already been inducted in the armed forces.

The missile was developed in two variants for land-attack and anti-ship roles.

Earlier this month, India and Philippines reportedly planned to sign BrahMos supersonic cruise missile deal next year.

The agreement was expected to be finalised earlier this year. However, the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic pushed back the signing. The two countries have been negotiating the deal since last year.
