The Indian and Russian armies have commenced the tenth Exercise Indra 18 with an opening ceremony at Babina Military Station in Jhansi district, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The ceremony was attended by contingents of the two participating armies in addition to a number of other officers and officials from the two countries.

Carried out to practice joint planning, Exercise Indra 18 has been designed to increase interoperability between the armies of India and Russia in a peacekeeping and enforcement environment under the support of the United Nations (UN).

“Involving all the three services of the armed forces, Indra-2017 was the first-ever tri-service joint exercise carried out by the two countries together.”

Due to continue for eleven days, this year’s exercise started with a flypast of army aviation helicopters, as well as social networking between members of the participating nations.

The joint exercise is scheduled for completion on 28 November. It focuses on training participating soldiers to enhance team building and support tactical level operations in a counter-insurgency environment in semi-urban terrain.

Last year, Indra was held from 19 to 29 October with Russia’s Eastern Military District.
