The Israeli Ministry of Defence has acquired Rafael’s Fire Weaver system to connect sensors and personnel for a ‘digitised battlespace’.

The system, jointly developed by Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D) and Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, is designed to link personnel and systems, reducing engagement times and increasing ‘operational performance’.

The system can map targets, locations, points of interests, friendly personnel and more. This information is shared instantly across several systems to give personnel on operations greater situational awareness.

Fire Weaver uses artificial intelligence to analyse information from the combat environment and prioritise fire allocation. Rafael says Fire Weaver can calculate the best shooter to engage a target based on many factors including line-of-sight, ammo status and more.

DDR&D Project Leader Lieutenant Colonel R said: “Fire Weaver is a main milestone in the IDF’s battlefield digitisation effort. The innovative system essentially creates an ‘operational internet’ and brings to the battlefield the same innovation that the internet brought to the civilian world, the smart home and the smart cities.

“Fire Weaver enables operational connectivity between Joint forces and simplifies integration processes between naval, air and ground forces”

Fire Weaver is designed to work hand-in-hand with traditional C4I systems, however, unlike most C4I technology which is designed at a commander level, Fire Weaver is designed to provide personnel with real-time information displayed on equipment like weapon sights.

Rafael’s Land Innovation Centre head Brigadier General Shmuel Olanski said: “Fire Weaver is a significant force-multiplier, and it joins Rafael’s vast portfolio of ground-breaking systems, integrating top-notch technologies.

“In line with Rafael’s vision of connecting the capabilities, Fire Weaver will help the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) in its efforts to prepare for the challenges of the multidimensional battlefield.”

Outside Israel, Fire Weaver has been selected by the German Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Federal Armed Forces (BAAINBw) for a study into the utility of the technology in late December.

In Germany, Atos GmbH partnered with Rafael to demonstrate the use of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) in partnership with ground combat vehicles as part of the study into what is being referred to as the ‘glass battlefield’ or ‘ErzUntGlas’.
