Germany-based technology company Hensoldt has secured an order to supply sight systems for the Royal Netherlands Army’s Fennek light armoured reconnaissance vehicles (LARVs).

The order is worth around €75m ($90.5m) and has been awarded by German defence company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW).

Hensoldt will provide 188 BAA II NL observation and reconnaissance systems as well as various spare parts.

The company will modify the YellowKite camera to turn it into a day-vision or near-infrared (NIR) camera with colour vision and add a NIR cut filter to the camera.

Hensoldt will also provide a digital outlet.

Hensoldt Optronics CEO Andreas Hülle said: “Our optronic solutions combine sensors from different technologies to provide armoured vehicle crews with excellent situational awareness.

The BAA II NL is an advanced version of the BAA II JFST, which is operated by the German Armed Forces’ Joint Fire Support Teams.

KMW will handle the integration of the BAA II NL and its command-and-control system into the Fennek reconnaissance vehicles.

Hensoldt will deliver the qualification systems to KMW next year.

The company said that the series delivery will begin in 2023 and is due to be completed by 2027.

In November 2017, Hensoldt received an order to supply additional BAA II surveillance and reconnaissance platforms for the German Army.

As part of the €13.3m order, the company delivered 30 BAA II units for Fennek light armoured reconnaissance vehicles (LARVs) operated by Joint Fire Support Teams (JFSTs).

Earlier this week, Italian aerospace firm Leonardo agreed to buy a 25.1% stake in the company.

The transaction was agreed for a cash purchase price of around €606m ($733m).
