The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has contracted Hensoldt to deliver new radars to the German Armed Forces.

BAAINBw placed the order for the delivery and installation of four long-range radars under the Hughes Air Defence Radar Nachfolgesystem (HADR NF) programme. To deliver this capability, Hensoldt has entered a cooperation agreement on ballistic missile defence (BMD) capable long-range radars with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) subsidiary ELTA Systems.

Under the contract, Hensoldt and IAI will modernise airspace surveillance for the German military and develop ballistic missile defence (BMD) capabilities.

The radars will replace the Hughes Air Defence Radars (HADR) systems that have been in operation since the mid-1980s and are nearing the end of their lifecycle. They will support the German Armed Forces in countering the threat of long-range weapons.

Hensoldt spokesperson Lothar Belz told Airforce Technology that the new system’s capabilities include longer range, earlier and more precise target detection at a longer range, and various BMD capabilities.

The radar systems are based on existing and proven technologies manufactured by IAI/ELTA and operate in the S-band, which allows for more accurate targeting.

Hensoldt takes over the remaining part of the process, which “covers production and the customer-specific logistic services and guarantees the compliance with European norms and standards”, said Belz.

The companies will deliver, install and commission four long-range radar systems for the German Air Force, including providing training, documentation and spare parts.

The project’s duration will be approximately five and a half years. Deliveries will be distributed almost linearly across the duration of the programme.

Hensoldt was not able to disclose the value of the contract.

BAAINBw selected Hensoldt and ELTA for the latest contract after releasing a request for proposal (RFP) for the potential acquisition of the four radar systems in March last year.

Last month, BAAINBw contracted Hensoldt for the airborne electronic signals intelligence system Pegasus. The system will be used by the Bundeswehr.
