The US Army has 21 wideband satellite operations centres (WSOCs) and management sites, which provide troops across the globe with critical communications.

These WSOCs provide transmissions monitoring and satellite payload control for the Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) III and Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite constellations.

The centres give guidance and instruction to terminals using the DSCS and WGS constellations. The WGS space segment is programmed to be a ten-satellite constellation.

The WGS, which support the crossbanding of X and Ka bands, form a key part of a new high-capacity satellite communications system that provides enhanced communications capability to troops in the field.
