Germany has agreed to support the design works for new ammunition storage facilities in the military units of Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The two countries signed an agreement, under which, Germany will invest up to €500,000 for the initiative.

The funds will be allocated under a German Government’s programme called ‘Ensuring and Strengthening the Security, Defence and Stability of Partner Countries’.

German Ambassador to Lithuania Matthias Sonn said: “A joint investment in the capabilities of Nato. Today, this is a small part of €100m allocated for the defence infrastructure in Lithuania.”

As planned, new ammunition storage facilities will be developed in the majority of Lithuanian Armed Forces’ military units.

The Lithuanian Armed Forces is expected to allocate an additional €1m for the design works.

Lithuanian National Defence vice-minister Eimutis Misiūnas said: “Germany’s military contribution and investments in the long-term security of Lithuania once again show the responsible approach of Germany to the security of Lithuania and all the Baltic States.

“This perfectly reflects the long-term investments to the improvement of the Lithuanian Armed Forces infrastructure and the permanent German contingent in Lithuania with more than 500 military personnel.”

The latest initiative builds on other joint Lithuanian-German collaborations.

In 2018, Germany awarded €1m for the modernisation of Pabradė and Gaižiūnai training areas and installation of multifunctional shooting ranges.

This comes when Lithuania has renewed focus to revamp and further develop its military infrastructure.

Recently, the US moved a larger contingent of troops in Lithuania for a military exercise. The move came when neighbouring Belarus is embroiled in protests following a disputed presidential election.
