The US and Thailand have concluded the 40th iteration of their annual multinational military training exercise ‘Cobra Gold 2021’.

The exercise is designed to train the troops in ensuring effective responses are delivered to regional crises while advancing regional security.

Held from 3 to 13 August, Cobra Gold 2021 took place in Thailand and is said to be one of the largest multinational exercises in Asia.

The Thai-US co-sponsored military exercise witnessed the participation of service members from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.

The exercise also featured observers and participants from other nations and organisations across the region.

Cobra Gold 21 deputy multinational force commander brigadier general Patrick Ellis said: “We appreciate this opportunity to once again join with friends, partners and allies here to carry out this long-standing multinational exercise, to learn from one another, and to further strengthen our bonds as military professionals.

“These bonds run especially deep between the Royal Thai and US armed forces. During the past 40 years, Cobra Gold has served as a cornerstone of the Thai-US alliance.”

This year, the exercise focussed on military training, civic action, as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. Medical trauma response training was also included.

During the exercise, Royal Thai and US service members conducted a landmine disposal exercise and unexploded ordnance destruction in Surin Province.

The service members eliminated more than 11,000 unexploded ordnance and helped protect civilians from remnants of war.

Field training exercises allowed Thai and the US troops from the army, marines and special operations to build interoperability and learn tactical skills.
