The Royal Danish Army has officially received the first PIRANHA 5 and EAGLE 5 armoured wheeled vehicles, marking their entry into operational use with the service.

Delivered by General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), the new generation of wheeled armoured vehicles were initially handed over to the Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) last year.

Danish Defence Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen was quoted by Jane’s as saying: “Our soldiers need modern equipment that meets the demands of the future battlefield … With these vehicles, I am confident that we can stand up in the future.”

GDELS signed a contract with the DALO for the delivery of 309 PIRANHA 8×8 armoured personnel carriers (APC) in December 2015.

With a value of approximately $600m, the contract involved the delivery of the APC in six variants, namely infantry, command, ambulance, engineer, mortar and repair.

The wheeled PIRANHA 5 vehicle is designed to offer high protection against ballistic threats, mines and improvised explosive devices.

“The EAGLE 4×4 is a light armoured wheeled vehicle equipped with unique suspension and drive-line system.”

It will serve as the backbone of the Danish Army’s armoured vehicle fleet and will replace the M113 APCs. Deliveries are expected to continue until 2023.

In 2017, the company received a contract for the supply of EAGLE 4×4 vehicle platform with options for variants such as electronic warfare, support and reconnaissance.

Under the contract, the initial batch included the delivery of 36 vehicles in the patrol armoured configuration.

The EAGLE 4×4 is a light armoured wheeled vehicle equipped with unique suspension and drive-line system. It is designed to provide enhanced protection, increased payload and crew capacity.

GDELS is also under a multi-year sustainment contract with the agency to provide through life support for the vehicles.

Belonging to the latest lineage of vehicles from GDELS-Mowag, different configurations of the PIRANHA 5 and EAGLE 5 vehicles are currently in use with more than 20 nations, including the US, Canada and Spain.
