Cubic wholly owned subsidiary Nuvotronics has secured a contract to support the US Department of Defense (DoD) ‘5G to Next G’ programme.

The contract was awarded by the US Department of Defense (DoD) through the National Spectrum Consortium. It will help ‘accelerate the implementation of wireless communications’ for the army.

Nuvotronics operates within the company’s Cubic Mission and Performance Solutions (CMPS) business division.

Under the $10m contract, Cubic Nuvotronics will develop a dual-band, ultra-high performance and low size, weight and power (SWaP) 5G wireless network communications transceiver (WNCT) for military applications.

The simultaneous dual-band operation of the WNCT provides higher operational resiliency.

It also ensures high-speed data with low latency and without any interference on current DoD operational frequencies.

Cubic Nuvotronics vice-president and general manager Martin Amen said: “As network demands increase and more devices are connected, connectivity in millimetre wave (mmWave) spectrum is critical to support higher throughput demands.

“Nuvotronics’ WNCT solution provides the ability to access this spectrum, allowing an ultra-fast, low-cost and high data rate solution to meet the demand, which is perfect for the adoption in AR/VR.”

Cubic Nuvotronics will work with the US Army Program Executive Office Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) and Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) and industry partners such as Nokia and the Wireless Research Center (WRC).

Work on the project will be performed for a period of three years with these partners.

The DoD recently announced it will be awarding $600m to contractors for ‘5G experimentation’ at five military test sites.

Projects based out of 5G experimentation are expected to support the DoD’s 4,800 sites and 560,000 facilities worldwide.
