Brazil, Colombia and Peru military officers participated in the Multinational Forces South (MNFS) Planning in Crisis (PIC) event, which was held from 26 to 30 October.

This will be followed by PANAMAX, an important training exercise for US Army South (ARSOUTH).

The officers conducted mission analysis as part of the PIC exercise hosted by US Army South at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.

PANAMAX is a US Southern Command-sponsored multinational exercise series that is held each year. It was previously scheduled to take place this year but was later rescheduled due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The exercise will now take place in February.

US Army South, which is the land element of the US Southern Command, works with the partner nations in Central, South America and the Caribbean to boost and increase defence capabilities.

Staff will be able to practice the Joint Planning Process during the exercise’s PIC portion.

Army South training and exercises director James Murphy said: “The key objective of the PIC is to develop an approved course of action and information necessary to develop the MNFS operation order and annexes to achieve desired results as directed by US Southern Command.

“It also give ARSOUTH the opportunity to work with the other components and partner nations to increase everyone’s planning interoperability and develop positive relationships.”

To ensure training opportunities are maximised, the main leadership roles in the exercise are changed each year.

The Combined Forces Land Component Command (CFLCC) element for PANAMAX will be led by the Brazilian Army.

Brazilian Army CFLCC Joint Operations Office Director Col Angelo Brait Jr said: “This effort is necessary to bring all the countries together to build and develop interoperability together.

“When we come here to the United States and start planning, we can talk with each other and make sure that different parts can work together.”
