The US Army has awarded a $139.8m contract to Boeing for the development and delivery of four new MH-47G Block II Chinook helicopters.

The four Chinook helicopters are to be delivered to the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command and will be the first aircraft to be outfitted with Block II upgrades.

Boeing H-47 Domestic and Foreign Military Sale Programmes director Pat Donnelly said: “The army uses the MH-47G for some of its most difficult and challenging mission.

“By incorporating key Block II features we significantly extend the service life, enhance performance, and maintain Chinook’s position as the world’s preeminent special operations helicopter.”

The production of the Block II MH-47G Chinooks is expected to extend into the late 2020s.

The US Army currently owns a total of 69 MH-47G Chinook helicopters.

Along with the MH-47G upgrades, Boeing is developing a Block II configuration for the army’s CH-47F Chinook advanced multi-mission helicopters.

In September 2014, the company successfully completed the initial flight and delivery of the first MH-47G aircraft to the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command under an approximately $300m programme, which included the development and supply of a total of eight helicopters through 2015.

The MH-47G Chinook helicopters are fully integrated with digital common avionics architecture system (CAAS), which facilitates global communications and navigation.

Featuring an integrated forward-looking infrared (FLIR) and multimode radar, the CAAS helicopter system helps conduct low-level flight operations in conditions of extremely poor visibility and adverse weather.

The MH-47G programme was designed as a modification of the Special Operations Aviation Regiment fleet of MH-47D and MH-47E Chinook helicopters to incorporate the service life extension elements of the US Army CH-47F programme.
